NAACP calls for an end to Birmingham police using pepper spray in schools

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The national NAACP is asking Mayor William Bell to ban the use of pepper spray in Birmingham city schools.

"Mace and pepper spray may be legitimate parts of an adult or crowd policing strategy, but they are not acceptable for use on school children," said NAACP President and Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Todd Jealous. "This is an unequivocal abuse of our young men and women. As long as we continue to treat students like criminals, they will grow up to become criminals." (Read More)

Voting As A 'Responsibility': How Hard Should It Be?

Ana Gonzalez, 63, has gone her whole life without a driver's license or a state-issued ID. That wasn't really a problem, until now.

She was born in Puerto Rico but moved soon after with her adoptive parents for the continental U.S., where she grew up. Her husband drives, and her odd jobs over the years have required only a Social Security card, which she has. She's just never needed a birth certificate before. (Read More)
